BOOK CLUB - MY RECOMMENDATIONS
All of the books that I recommend will work for adults and secondary schools students - or ambitious primary school readers. See if you can read a text at the same time as your child. Time to start a family book club!

This book is a historical novel based in Germany in World War two but also has a very satisfying dose of magical realism as Death tracks the protagonist, Leisel, as she steals books during the notorious era of Nazi book burning. This book has stayed with me since I read it close to 10 years ago. It could be time for a re-read, I think! Suitable 13+ on average.
Here's a post Halloween read for you! Anthony Horowitz has a long list of spooky short stories likely to keep all ages entertained. The Night Bus is a collection of three spooky stories. They are short (about 20 pages), accessible and fun. These would be good options for a family book club or books to read with younger teenagers older primary school children.
The Ruby in the Smoke has thought-provoking themes of family and addiction but is more accessible than Pullman's mesmerising Dark Materials trilogy. Set in Victorian England, it is an entertaining read in its own right but has the benefit of being an excellent introduction to that period for those who will study or are studying 19th-century novels like A Christmas Carol or Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
This dystopian novel is set in a protected world where The Receiver makes decisions for the community. When a new Receiver is announced, what will happen to the community? This story is provocative and thoughtful and encourages young people to think about the world around them - all wrapped up in an exciting adventure story. It also isn't overlong so shouldn't intimidate readers (young or old!)
